Jurgen Klopp calls for Spurs match to be replayed after VAR mistake

The Premier League reportedly do not intend on ‘granting’ Liverpool a replay with Tottenham, despite Jurgen Klopp’s recent suggestion. PGMOL have apologised for an error that occurred during the first half of the match which saw Luis Diaz’s opening goal wrongly disallowed, but they do not intend on resolving the issue on the pitch.

With the Reds down to 10 men at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, following Curtis Jones’ dismissal, Liverpool appeared to take a shock lead when Mohamed Salah threaded the ball through to Diaz, who then fired into the far corner.

However, the Colombia international’s celebrations were short-lived as the linesman ruled that he was in an offside position when the ball was played through. Replays showed that the official was incorrect though as Cristian Romero’s leg played the forward onside, but VAR failed to reverse the decision as they misread the situation and ‘agreed’ with the decision as they thought that the goal had been given.

Liverpool went on to lose the game 2-1 and there have been calls for the match to be replayed due to the significance of the error and how it would have changed the complexion of the rest of the game. BBC Sport report that there is ‘no chance’ of that happening, with the Premier League making that clear after the full time whistle sounded.
