Ange Postecoglou previews Spurs’ clash with Wolves
Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy is committed to helping Ange Postecoglou by making at least one January signing to boost squad depth, according to reports. The north Londoners have enjoyed a strong start to the Premier League campaign but find themselves facing an uphill battle to maintain their form after injuries to several key players.
Micky van de Ven has been one of Tottenham’s standout performers since joining the club over the summer but now faces an extended spell on the sidelines after suffering a hamstring injury against Chelsea on Monday. James Maddison picked up a long-term injury of his own in the same match and is not expected to return to action until at least January.
The feeling at Tottenham is that recent developments have exposed their lack of depth, meaning that extra reinforcements will be needed in January, according to The Independent. It is claimed that Levy is willing to support Postecoglou’s efforts to lead a Premier League title charge by making at least one first-team signing at the turn of the year.
The report adds that Spurs are likely to target even more players, although the unpredictable nature of the transfer window means that no guarantees can be made regarding how many signings will be possible. In any case, it will be crucially important for Spurs to use the market wisely to stand the best chance of staying at the business end of the table.

A new defender will reportedly be at the very top of Levy’s shopping list, while it is said that another winger could also be brought in to add some extra depth in attack. It remains to be seen how Spurs will fare when the transfer window reopens, with a big month of business the aim for Postecoglou as he looks to build on his strong start to life in north London. Postecoglou confirmed on Friday that Van de Ven’s injury turned out to be worse than initially expected, while Maddison is in the same boat and will also be on the treatment table for quite some time. Richarlison, meanwhile, remains sidelined after undergoing surgery this week but is only expected to be out for around a month.
“Micky, with a hamstring injury we knew was fairly significant, we’re looking at a couple of months into the new year,” said Postecoglou. “Madders is a lot worse than we first thought, he was bad the next day, again into the new year with him. Richarlison, the operation that we had was kind of scheduled with the international break anyway, with him a month out.”
