Liverpool were right to beat Man Utd to deal despite extra transfer charge

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp knew he had only limited time to act during the summer transfer window of 2022, once it became clear arch rivals Manchester United fully intended on landing Darwin Nunez and presenting Erik Ten Hag with an chaotic centre forward to start his Old Trafford reign.

After learning that the Uruguay ace was in favour of moving to Anfield and working under the guidance of Klopp, Liverpoo wasted little time in striking a deal with Benfica and parting with an initial outlay of £65m, with further payments built into the agreement.

This weekend, as the Reds battled for a point against Manchester City, Nunez’s appearance meant a further £8.5m in fees was owed to the Portuguese club, to be paid immediately.

While this could be percieved as eating further into Klopp’s upcoming January transfer budget, Liverpool are already enjoying tidy returns from their investment.

This season Nunez has both started to truly find his feet in English football, and also strike up a formidable partnership with Mohamed Salah.

The duo have 18 goal contributions between them each so far this season, with the festive run-in of fixtures yet to begin.

Making the payment to Benfica this weekend has now established Nunez as Liverpool most expensive ever signing, with a total transfer outlay of £85m.

The figure stands at £10m greater than that paid for the previous record signing Virgil van Dijk, who was acquired from Southampton for £75m.

In the time since missing out on the services of Nunez to Liverpool, United splurged cash on a variety of different forward options and experienced little success with any.

The same fee Liverpool paid for Nunez, United later shelled out on Brazilian forward Antony, who has been the height of disappointment so far at Old Trafford.

Klopp and Liverpool fans have been rubbing their hands ever since the unveiling of Nunez, despite his many critics across the top flight.

The Anfield No.9 now has seven goals and six assists to his name this season and counting. The transfer fee is paid up in full and Klopp’s believe in his is already paying off.
