Manchester City legend Sergio Aguero has assured fans he is okay after reports he was hospitalised in Miami following a jet ski accident in Cuba.

The 35-year-old retired striker admitted his mum had phoned him in tears along with worried son Benji, 14, after news of his ‘crash’ was published online. He insisted overnight in a selfie video thought to have been filmed from his home in Florida: “Hi there, everyone. I hope you’re all doing fine.

“You know why I’m recording this video. I don’t know who invented the fact that I’d had a jet ski accident. I’ve had people, family, my son, asking me if I’m okay, my mum crying, so I don’t know what to say really, who invented this, but here I am, doing well, and all calm. Thanks to everyone for their concern, but nothing happened.”

He ended the video with a kiss to his Instagram followers, saying: “I love you.” Aguero, who had to retire early from football in December 2021 aged 33 due to a heart condition, survived a car crash in Amsterdam in September 2017 while he was still with Man City.

He suffered a broken rib when a taxi he was a passenger in struck a pillar. He had travelled to Holland on a day off to attend a concert of Colombian singer-songwriter Maluma.

Reports at the time said he escaped more serious injuries in the accident, which happened as he was making his way back to the airport after the concert to catch a flight to Manchester, because he was wearing a seatbelt. Aguero confessed in January 2021 to a secret car crash while he was still at old club Atletico Madrid before joining City in July 2011 in a deal worth £35million.

He told Spanish streamer Ibai Llanos in an interview about the incident – said to have happened when he didn't have a driving licence: “It was a brand new car, for me it was a Ferrari, and I asked my driver if I could take over.

"He told me to be careful but I wanted to accelerate a bit. There was a bridge behind the Vicente Calderon stadium and unconsciously I looked at the stadium and when I looked ahead of me again all the cars in front of me had braked and I hit an old banger. I wanted to die.”

The former footballer was told to rest for at least three months after being diagnosed with cardiac arrhythmia following a dramatic incident at the end of October 2021. He was taken to hospital after clutching his chest and complaining of breathing problems and dizziness during his fifth game for Barcelona against Alaves.

He called time on his glittering career in December that year at an emotional press conference. In March last year he had to assure fans he was okay after appearing to suffer heart issues during a live streaming session.

The then-34-year-old left viewers concerned after cutting short his sentence and bringing his hand to his chest as Ibai Llanos asked whether he needed a doctor. The former player stuttered: “I think I just suffered a minor arrhythmia.”

The streaming session finished before his medic confirmed whether the microchip Aguero had fitted after tests showed up an irregular heartbeat, had detected a problem or not. Hours later the Argentinian took to Instagram to tell fans: “Hi everyone. Many of you have been asking me how I am.

“Don’t worry. It was nothing really. Everything’s okay now. The doctors have told me everything’s alright and there’s no problem. You can therefore rest easy.”
