JOCKEY TO FOLLOW

JIM CROWLEY will be centre stage at Longchamp on Sunday but significantly he operates away from the main action at Haydock on Saturday afternoon. The most successful jockey at the track this season with rides today has obvious chances with BOLSENA (Haydock, 2.10) and BURDETT (Haydock, 5.02) but his most intriguing mount is ENFJAAR (Haydock, 4.25), who runs for the first time since losing his unbeaten record in the Group Three Jersey Stakes at Royal Ascot.

TRAINER TO FOLLOW

ANDREW BALDING has an outstanding record at Chester with 36 wins in the last five years, eight of them this season. He will be disappointed if he does not add to that tally with one or both of his runners, BERKSHIRE NUGGET (Chester, 1.30) and BRITANNICA (Chester, 2.35)

BIG DAY FOR

Apprentice AIDEN BROOKES, who has the ride on David O’Meara’s Bet365 Cambridgeshire Handicap hope ZOZIMUS (Newmarket, 3.40). The five-year-old, formerly trained by Joseph O’Brien, has slipped down the handicap and is running into form.

WHAT’S IN A NAME

SIMCA MILLE (Longchamp, Sunday, 3.05) The Arc hope is named after the Simca 1000, a rear-engine four-door saloon car produced in France. Two million were made between 1961 and 1978.

WATCH OUT FOR

JASNA’S SECRET (Newmarket, 2.25). The reason Christophe Soumillon has turned up on Saturday at Britain’s Flat race HQ rather than Longchamp. This Cheveley Park Stakes hope was an easy winner of her two races at Deauville and has been bought by big-spending Qatari owners since her last start.

HORSES FOR COURSES

SAFE VOYAGE (Haydock, 4.25) has run at the Merseyside track seven times, winning on four of them and finishing second once.

TRAINER TARGET

Paul Midgley has won the Armstrong Memorial Handicap at Ripon twice in the past three years. He runs STRONG JOHNSON and VADAMIAH (Ripon, 4.05).

PERFECT PARTNERS

Sean Bowen has partnered five winners from 14 rides for Ryan Potter to show a £1 level stake profit of +£5.00 He rides FAZAYTE (Market Rasen, 5.40) for the trainer.

BEST RACE FOR FAVOURITES

Five have won the 2.40 at Haydock in the last 10 years.

TOP PRIZEMONEY EARNERS

CHESTER: 2.05 TASHKHAN — £278,549

HAYDOCK: 4.25 SAFE VOYAGE — £ 628,330

NEWMARKET: 5.25 ACCIDENTAL AGENT — £ 754,560

Best Bets – By Steve Ryder

Last year’s Cambridgeshire third Dual Identity is fancied to go two places better this year, following an impressive win last time out, but Majestic (Newmarket, 3.40, nb) can retain his crown.

The Jack Channon-trained gelding defied odds of 25-1 to prevail off a mark of 86 and he is just 3lb higher this year. He faces a couple of unexposed three-year-olds in the shape of Greek Order and Oviedo but is expected to outrun his odds again.

Baez, the favourite for the Watergate Cup Handicap (Chester, 2.05), looks opposable from 6lb out of the handicap and preference instead goes to last year’s winner Emiyn (nap). The Declan Carroll-trained gelding is a three-time course winner at a track that suits his front-running style and hopefully his regular rider Zak Wheatley can adopt those tactics from the plum draw in stall one. He is off a career-high mark of 92 but should give another bold show in this race.

The Wizard of Odds – By Chris Baker

2.40 HAYDOCK

MANILA SCOUSE finished a close third at York last week and will be well suited by today’s conditions, having won on heavy ground over this course and distance.

3.00 NEWMARKET

VANDEEK (nap) beat three of today’s rivals when winning the Group One Prix Morny last month. He is open to lots more improvement and can extend his unbeaten record to four.

3.40 NEWMARKET

EAGLE’S WAY won all four of his races last season and has shaped with promise on two of his three outings this year. He has solid each-way claims at a big price.
