Tottenham exit collapses after Arsenal loan agreement in Ange Postecoglou blow

Tottenham have seen their hopes of offloading Sergio Reguilon collapse after Arsenal agreed the loan departure of Kieran Tierney to Real Sociedad. Spurs had been in talks with the La Liga club over sending their Spanish full-back on loan to the Basque Country but their hopes of reaching an agreement have now died.

That’s because Tierney is due to undergo a medical with Sociedad this weekend ahead of completing his shock move to Spain.

Sociedad will pay Arsenal a small loan fee and will also cover his wages for the season.

Meanwhile, Tottenham find themselves returning to the drawing board as they attempt to find a solution for Reguilon.

He spent last season on loan at Atletico Madrid and had been handed a chance to impress in pre-season under new boss Postecoglou.

Despite starting the Aussie’s first match in charge – a 3-2 defeat to West Ham in Perth – Reguilon failed to leave an impression on Postecoglou.

Destiny Udogie is now the first-choice left-back with Ben Davies providing cover in the position.

Last summer, Reguilon was frozen out by Antonio Conte after being left behind for the pre-season tour of South Korea.

He is now free to find a new club and Tottenham plan to get several fringe players out the door by the time the transfer window closes.

Posteocoglou was asked whether new arrivals are unlikely in north London due to his inflated squad but the Aussie predicted that Spurs will make progress on outgoings – indicating there will be a number of departures.

He said: “Not necessarily. These kinds of things are pretty fluid, they can happen pretty quickly.

“At the moment you can see by doing the maths we have got too many players in terms of when we submit our final list, there will be guys here who won’t be on that list if nothing changes so I am pretty sure that will change. From now until the end of the window I am sure there will be some movement.”

Hugo Lloris is back in training with Tottenham but Posteocoglou has made it clear his future lies elsewhere.

Fulham have also shown interest in Eric Dier while Tanguy Ndombele has attracted interest from France and Turkey.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg is also admired by Atletico Madrid and the Dane could move on after three seasons with the club.

He has recently been removed from Tottenham’s leadership group by Postecoglou, who has been quick to put his own stamp on the squad he inherited from Ryan Mason.

Tottenham travel to Bournemouth in the Premier League this weekend.
