Mike Dean shoots down Erik ten Hag theory that VAR robbed Man Utd of winner

Mike Dean has dismissed Erik ten Hag’s claims that Manchester United were robbed of a late winner at Arsenal due to a fault with VAR technology. The Red Devils thought they’d won it late in the day when Alejandro Garnacho raced through and slotted the ball past Aaron Ramsdale in front of a jubilant away end at the Emirates Stadium.

But the strike was chalked off for offside before Declan Rice and Gabriel Jesus dealt Manchester United a sickening blow following two late Arsenal goals to earn the Gunners all three points.

After United left empty-handed, Ten Hag couldn’t resist a pop at the technology as he felt the camera angle was not in the correct place to make a decision on Garnacho’s goal – suggesting the officials got the call wrong.

But ex-Premier League referee Dean shot down his reaction making it clear there is no margin for error at Stockley Park.

He said during Sky Sports’ coverage: “It’s obviously very, very tight. I was watching upstairs and I can see why the assistant referee has kept his flag down. That’s what they’re told to do.

“If in doubt, keep it down and go back to VAR and take a look at it. I did say upstairs that I thought it was offside at first glance.

“There’s one or two angles where one looks on, one looks off.

“When they put the lines up, you can’t fault the technology. They put the lines in the right place.

“The angles there to be used, they would have used crosshair to make sure the angles are in the right direction.

“I understand where the manager is coming from because the angle there isn’t ideal but we’ve got the technology in the hub to put the lines in the right position. It also looked offside at normal speed.”

United have now lost two of their opening four matches and have been left to lick their wounds ahead of the international break.

“The performance is right,” Ten Hag told Sky Sports after the full-time whistle.

“We played a very good game but everything went against us. Then you don’t win the game. If we had a bit more luck, we would have won.

“It was not offside, it was the wrong angle. It was a penalty on Rasmus Hojlund. When we conceded the goal, Jonny Evans was fouled, it was so obvious.

“We have to accept it but I see the angle, and it was not offside. It feels a little bit nasty but you have to accept it.”

He later added: “We have to accept it but I see the angle. I don’t see it as offside.

“But it doesn’t change the result. It is what it is, you have to accept it.”
