Gary Lineker rinses Alan Shearer and Ian Wright with brilliant quip on MOTD

Gary Lineker's well-timed quip aimed at Alan Shearer and Ian Wright left the pair in stitches despite being the butt of the joke.

The Match of the Day host – who has presented the BBC's flagship sport show since 1999 – began Saturday's (October 28) show by discussing the Premier League action set to be shown later in the programme. Lineker, never shy of making a joke at his colleagues' expense, delighted fans with a quip aimed at an unassuming Shearer and Wright.

The former Barcelona striker began the show by saying: "Just the five matches this week, three of the top six in action including Arsenal and Newcastle," before adding: "We asked for two legends but Thierry Henry and Shola Ameobi couldn't make it."

Shearer and Wright couldn't contain their laughter at Lineker's wisecrack, which was also appreciated by fans on social media, with one X user writing: "Mr Lineker very funny," while another was just happy to see the trio together again as they wrote: "Finally these 3 back on MOTD, think itโ€™s first time this season. Can we have @IanWright0 and @alanshearer on together a lot more please."

The former strikers have drummed up an entertaining relationship on-screen in successful TV careers following their footballing careers where all three ex-players reached the top of their field.

While Lineker won a league title in his career, he was named PFA Players' Player of the Year in 1986 during his only season with Everton where he scored 30 league goals. A move to Barcelona saw the Englishman win the Copa Del Rey in a three-year stint with the Spanish giants where he netted 52 goals in 138 games.

Shearer and Wright both won the Premier League, with Blackburn and Arsenal, respectively, and are both members of the Premier League 100 club with the former leading that list with 260 goals for the Newcastle legend. The Arsenal icon has 113 goals in England's top-flight despite all his 118 goals for Crystal Palace occurring before the creation of the Premier League in the 1992/93 season.
