England boss Southgate risks Raheem Sterling dispute as winger snubbed again

Gareth Southgate announces latest England squad

Gareth Southgate is set to snub Raheem Sterling for the second time in a week. The Chelsea winger has not been called up to take part in England’s upcoming matches, and he is reportedly set to remain out in the cold, despite Jack Grealish and Trent Alexander-Arnold withdrawing from the squad through injury.

Manchester City’s Grealish and Liverpool’s Alexander-Arnold both reported to the St George’s Park training base along with the rest of the England squad earlier this week. Medics checked them over before a thigh injury for Grealish and a hamstring issue for Alexander-Arnold saw them withdraw.

Sterling may have been licking his lips at a potential call-up after surprisingly being left out by Southgate first time around. However, The Daily Mail claim that the England boss does not plan on replacing either player for the Euro 2024 qualifier against Ukraine on Saturday and the friendly against Scotland next Tuesday.

After naming his squad, Southgate admitted that Sterling did not take his omission particularly well after making a strong start to the campaign with Chelsea.

“To bring Raheem back in we have to leave someone else out and on the back of our three games [earlier this year] I didn’t think anybody in this group of attacking players warrants being left out,” explained the 53-year-old.

“It’s a difficult call and Raheem is not particularly happy about it, but I understand that because he’s an important player for us. I’m convinced he’s going to have an excellent season with Chelsea, there’s no doubt about that.”

Sterling has kicked off the Premier League campaign with two goals in four matches for Chelsea. Although the Blues are struggling as a collective under manager Mauricio Pochettino, the winger has shown flashes of his best form after enduring a troubled first year at the club.

With 82 caps, Sterling trails only Harry Kane among Southgate’s current crop in terms of international experience. The former Man City star has scored 20 goals for the Three Lions, with 16 of them coming in his last 35 appearances.

“It’s really good to see him start the season so well. He looks in good condition, he looks hungry,” added Southgate. “He’s obviously an important player for us and has been an important player for us.

“But we have in those attacking areas just behind the nine a lot of competition for places. I think all of those players have started the season well and certainly the group that are with us has done really well for us in the recent games.”
