How does Caicedo’s Chelsea transfer compare to previous big-money deals?

Chelsea owner Todd Boehly ensured the Blues can bring in some extra cash in the future by including sell-on clauses when he offloaded some of their stars over the summer. Boehly oversaw a hectic summer in west London as he brought in 12 players, while allowing nine aces to permanently leave Stamford Bridge in exchange for transfer fees.

It’s been all change at Chelsea since Boehly bought the club from Roman Abramovich at the end of May 2022. The American has overseen a huge turnover of players, with the Blues squad barely recognisable compared to the one he inherited.

Boehly managed to net his club £65million from Arsenal in exchange for Kai Havertz, while Manchester United paid £55m for Mason Mount. But it was some of the smaller money deals that enabled Boehly to exhibit his shrewd business ways.

According to The Athletic, in the cases of Christian Pulisic, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Callum Hudson-Odoi and several others, Boehly insisted that Chelsea receive a percentage of any future sales. And those clauses are likely to bolster the Blues’ transfer kitty further down the line.

AC Milan paid Chelsea £20m in return for Pulisic, while the Italian club also put £15m plus add-ons on the table for Loftus-Cheek. But the Blues could only command an initial £3m plus add-ons of £2m when they sold Hudson-Odoi to Nottingham Forest.

Despite their prolific incoming and outgoing transfer activity over the summer, Chelsea have only won one of their opening four matches this season and are 12th in the Premier League table. And they already face an uphill battle just to break into the top four.

During the Blues’ pre-season tour of the USA, manager Mauricio Pochettino addressed the issues with player turnover as he explained: “It is about creating a squad with good balance and people who have the opportunity to play and can compete for their place.

“That is a big job and challenge for us in the transfer window to build a good relationship and good balance. Then, if players are not happy because they believe they are not going to play, we are going to find a solution with the club and fix the situation.

“What we cannot have is a massive squad, players not be involved and then it’s going to create a mess in the squad. Maybe less is more and more is less, it is not mathematic. That is why I need to make clear we don’t need a big squad. We need 22, 23, 24 players with some younger and that’s it. I am so sorry because maybe the decision will be tough but we need to build a good and balanced team who want to compete for things.”
