Melbourne star Clayton Oliver headed home from the Demons’ training camp in Lorne on Monday night as he continues to deal with his ongoing health challenges.

The Demons have been working closely with the 26-year-old since revealing to members he was battling to adhere to the club’s standards on and off the field and the club is continuing to support him.

Oliver did not train on Saturday but made his way to the first day of the training camp before heading back to Melbourne.

Melbourne football manager Alan Richardson said the decision was made on Monday.

“Clayton is taking a break as he continues to deal with some issues. We are continuing to support Clayton and managing his program in a way that prioritises his health and wellbeing,” Richardson said.

“His teammates and staff remain confident he is making good progress.”

The four-time best and fairest winner has had a tumultuous off-season that saw clubs, including Adelaide, chase him during the trade period before the Demons shut down speculation he was attainable.

The club then outlined in a letter to members the challenges Oliver was facing.

“The club has been aware of and supporting Clayton with his personal circumstances for some time and is committed to continuing to do so,” Pert said.

“While club leaders focus on the care and support Clayton needs, we also have a responsibility to uphold our strong club culture for the benefit of all our players and staff.”

Oliver suffered a seizure in October that saw him attend hospital. He also had a minor knee procedure in the off-season which has seen him on a modified training program.

Oliver is due to face Magistrates Court in January for driving while his licence was suspended due to medical advice after his seizure.

Demons’ skipper Max Gawn arrived at Lorne on Wednesday after the birth of his second child, Louis, while forward Jake Melksham ran for the first time after undergoing a knee reconstruction at the end of the home and away season and missing the finals.
