Daniel Dubois fought on Jake Paul undercard – and won inside first round

British heavyweight boxer Daniel Dubois has come a heck of a long way in two years.

The 25-year-old will step toe-to-toe with WBA (Super), IBF and WBO heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk in a potentially career-altering encounter on Saturday evening, 24 months after competing on the undercard of a Jake Paul fight.

Ahead of Paul's victory over Tyron Woodley back in August 2021, Dubois fought American Joe Cusumano, and won via TKO in the first round.

He pocketed $100,000 (£79,000) from the fight, roughly 5% of the fee (£1.6m) he's expected to earn against Usyk on Saturday evening, whether he pulls off a shock victory or not.

His triumph over Cusumano earned him the right to face Trevor Bryan for the WBA (Regular) heavyweight title in July 2022, and he won in convincing fashion, knocking his opponent out in the fourth round.

Dubois has won 18 of his 20 professional fights via knockout, boasting a similar record to that of notorious knockout artist Deontay Wilder.

He's lost just one fight in his career, against compatriot Joe Joyce in November 2020. He was toppled in the 10th round, relinquishing the British, Commonwealth, WBC Silver and WBO International heavyweight titles in the process.

Usyk, 36, heads into the bout following two successive victories over Anthony Joshua.

The undefeated Ukrainian beat AJ for the titles via unanimous decision in September 2021, and won their rematch via split decision a year ago.

A winner-take-all clash with WBC heavyweight champion Tyson Fury at Wembley Stadium was very briefly in the pipelines earlier this year, but it got pulled due to contractual disputes, despite Usyk agreeing to a 30-70 split of the fight purse.
