Mykhaylo Mudryk ‘defying’ Chelsea orders as dressing room leak exposes Ukrainian

Chelsea star Mykhaylo Mudryk is reportedly defying team orders by continuing to go all out in the gym. There had been fears among players and staff at Stamford Bridge that the Ukrainian had been overexerting himself in an attempt to make an impact with the Blues.

Mudryk’s questionable form since signing from Shakhtar Donetsk in January has never been a question of work rate or application. The £88million man is a picture of pace and hard work down the left flank whenever called upon by Mauricio Pochettino.

But wayward touches and poor finishing have so far prevented Mudryk from realising his full potential in west London. So eager is the 22-year-old to make his mark, reports indicate that he was pushing himself too hard in the gym, and he had been urged to tone it down.

Back in September, Mudryk was believed to be seeking out extra gym sessions away from his usual routine at Chelsea’s Cobham training complex.

It appears as though the youngster has opted not to take the guidance on board, as an unnamed Chelsea player told The Daily Mail last week: “He is trying so hard, it is like he is in the gym every hour of the day.”

Mudryk arrived at Chelsea with a big reputation, having enjoyed an impressive breakthrough half-season with Shakhtar in 2022/23. Arsenal launched transfer bids of their own before being outgunned by the Blues.

Before the wide man took the leap of faith and moved to the Premier League, Shakhtar director of football Darijo Srna labelled him the best left-winger in the world behind Kylian Mbappe, Neymar and Viniciur Jr.

Chelsea fans were therefore left scratching their heads when Mudryk made his first 20 appearances in the English top flight without scoring a single goal. The Ukraine international finally put things right on Monday, however, with a well-taken finish in the 2-0 win over Fulham.

“We need to understand that young people need time and need to settle,” said Pochettino after the game. “It’s about adaptation. It’s a big change when Mudryk arrived here and when you arrive at a team, it’s not easy to settle in a team that isn’t solid.

“It’s about time, having patience, trusting these young talented players, building confidence. It’s a big job, step by step. Sometimes people don’t have the patience but for us it’s about having the patience. Even when we weren’t winning, we were calm, stayed positive, had the belief.”
