Manchester United will reportedly keep faith in Erik ten Hag even if they fail to make the top four this season.

The Red Devils have made their worst-ever start to a Premier League campaign, losing five of their first 10 matches, culminating in a dismal 3-0 drubbing at the hands of Manchester City on Sunday. They're eighth in the table, 11 points behind league-leaders Tottenham and eight points adrift of the Champions League places.

Fears within the club that they'll miss out on a top four spot have intensified over the last few weeks, but according to ESPN, Ten Hag will be given time to steady the creaking ship. There's an acceptance that off-field problems – such as the ongoing takeover saga and injuries to key players – have blighted the campaign and Ten Hag's future at the club won't be called into question unless the on-field issues persist long-term.

Ten Hag bought himself time and space to fail after guiding the club to a third-place finish last season as well as to two domestic cup finals. They were beaten by Man City in the FA Cup final, but their win over Newcastle in the League Cup final saw them land silverware for the first time since 2017.

Senior figures within the club realise that the team's form must improve drastically if they're to enjoy the same sort of success this season. However, Ten Hag's comments after the defeat to City suggested that might be easier said than done.

Will Erik ten Hag be Manchester United manager this time next year? Let us know in the comments section below.

When asked if he wanted United to pay the kind of football his old Ajax side used to, Ten Hag bluntly replied: "We will never play that football. Because those were different players. This is also not why I came here. We are playing different football than I showed at Ajax because I have to, because I can't play the same way.

"The players decide how you play. Ajax has a very typical and characteristic style of play, with Manchester United I will always show different football. I did so last year as well. We play much more direct football here because I have the players for that here."
