Manchester United chiefs would have to pay Erik ten Hag more than £15million to sack him, according to reports. The Dutchman is facing increasing pressure following five defeats in the opening 10 Premier League matches of the season.
Ten Hag had a successful first season at Old Trafford after replacing Ralf Rangnick. He ended the club’s six-year wait for silverware by winning the Carabao Cup final against Newcastle in February.
A title charge was unrealistic in his first campaign but a third-placed finish ensured United were back in the Champions League. But despite spending around £190million on new signings in the summer, it has been a horror start to his second year in English football.
United sit eighth in the Premier League, already 11 points behind first-placed Tottenham. They also lost their opening two Champions League group stage matches to put qualification to the knockout round in doubt.

Sunday’s 3-0 loss in the Manchester derby at Old Trafford was perhaps the most worrying result so far. The gulf in class between United and City looked as big as ever.
According to the Mirror, Ten Hag’s job is not yet at risk. But the pressure is increasing and if Ten Hag is no longer deemed the right man, it would cost United more than £15m to get rid of him.
The uncertainty over United’s takeover situation continues to rumble on. INEOS founder Sir Jim Ratcliffe looks set to buy a 25 per cent stake in the club and would take control of all footballing decisions.

If Ratcliffe wanted to put his stamp on the club, a change in manager may be one of the decisions he looks to make. Ten Hag’s contract runs until 2025 but results must improve for him to keep the faith of the hierarchy.
United face a repeat of last season’s final when they host Newcastle in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday evening. Ten Hag chose against holding a press conference ahead of the match as, unlike in the Premier League, clubs are not obliged to do so for the competition.
Fixtures come thick and fast for United, as they face a trip to Fulham on Saturday before the reverse match away to Copenhagen in the Champions League. Defeat in Denmark would leave United’s qualification hopes hanging by a thread, with a trip to Galatasaray on the horizon while Bayern Munich are still set to visit Old Trafford.
