Erik ten Hag previews Arsenal v Man Utd clash

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag insists that Alejandro Garnacho’s late goal against Arsenal should not have been disallowed for offside. The Dutchman claims that VAR officials assessed the move by looking at the wrong angle, before the Gunners notched twice late on to clinch a 3-1 win.

Strikes from Marcus Rashford and Martin Odegaard left the contest finely poised going into the second half on Sunday afternoon. As the 90th minute approached, Alejandro Garnacho looked to have taken the game by the scruff of the neck by racing through on goal and slotting past Aaron Ramsdale.

The Argentine’s celebrations were cut short after a VAR consultation, however, as pictures revealed that he was marginally offside. Declan Rice and Gabriel Jesus went on to score twice in stoppage time to rub salt in United’s wounds and seal a 3-1 triumph that sent the home crowd wild.

After the final whistle, Ten Hag explained that he had seen an angle suggesting that Garnacho was in fact onside when he was played in to score what would have been the winner.

“The performance is right,” the Dutchman told Sky Sports. “We played a very good game but but when everything goes against us, we don’t win the game. If we had a bit more luck, we would have won.

“It was not offside, it was the wrong angle. It was a penalty on [Rasmus] Hojlund. When we conceded the goal, Jonny Evans was fouled – it was so obvious. We have to accept it but I have seen the angle and [Garnacho] was not offside. It feels a little bit nasty but you have to accept it.”

The result was huge for Arsenal, who sit only two point behind Manchester City in their quest to avenge last season’s Premier League title near-miss. Mikel Arteta’s side have been far from their best in the opening weeks of the campaign, but they have only dropped two points heading into the international break.

As for United, Ten Hag has overseen two defeats from four league games, leaving his side 11th for the next two weeks. Even so, the 53-year-old was pleased with what he saw at the Emirates as the Red Devils made it a close contest for the first 96 minutes.

“It was a step forward and I was happy with the performance, absolutely,” he added. “We are more compact, good at defending, high and low blocks – everyone was involved. On the ball we were calm.

“I also see room for improvement, we missed some passes forward and we could have hurt them more. I think Hojlund played very well, but also Anthony Martial – a very good performance. I was very pleased but I thought Hojlund had a good impact on the game.”
