Liverpool have been told to lose their hope of signing Kylian Mbappe in the future by former Arsenal star Gael Clichy, despite being linked with the forward previously. The Paris Saint-Germain star was heavily tipped to make a move away from the Ligue 1 over the summer, with many anticipating him to leave the club as a free agent at the end of the season despite speculation of contract extension talks being back on.

Mbappe is widely regarded as one of the best players in world football, with his extended spell at PSG potentially hindering his progress. The forward has scored seven goals in six league appearances for the club so far this season, despite Luis Enrique’s side making a slow start to the campaign that has left Les Parisiens fifth in the table, and he remains the name on the lips of Europe’s top clubs.

The versatile attacker went public with his intention of becoming a free agent in 2024, though reports around a move away from the Parc des Princes have cooled of late. Real Madrid remain long-term admirers of Mbappe and are expected to be waiting patiently so that they can pounce next summer though.

Having delivered the World Cup to France as a teenager, the 24-year-old has earned himself comparisons with Les Bleus great Thierry Henry – and his former Gunners teammate Clichy feels that the links are accurate. He told Genting Casino: “Mbappe reminds me of Theirry Henry as he can pop up with vital goals and has so much charisma and confidence. I haven’t seen a player with this much confidence since Thierry.”

With such uncertainty surrounding his future, Clichy then urged the likes of Liverpool and Manchester United to give up hope of securing the signature of Mbappe, claiming that his former side Manchester City are the only English outfit capable of potentially rivalling Real Madrid for the ex-Monaco star.

He claimed: “Him going to City would be great, but as I’ve said before, the Premier League is the most challenging league in the world. Mbappe’s favourite club is seemingly Real Madrid – and that’s understandable due to their history and status. If he leaves PSG, I can’t see him going anywhere before Real Madrid. Not Liverpool, not Arsenal, not Man United, and not Tottenham.”

Mbappe has never shut down links to the Premier League, but Clichy feels that his former manager Pep Guardiola would be the decisive factor in persuading the 24-year-old to alter his plans to enjoy a spell in England.

The ex-left-back continued: “The only Premier League club who I feel could tempt Kylian would be City due to Pep Guardiola’s influence as well as what City have achieved over the last few years. City also have the financial muscle to maintain their status.”
