Liverpool ‘battling Man City for West Ham star’ as part of Klopp’s overhaul

Liverpool are reportedly ready to battle Manchester City for West Ham star Nayef Aguerd.

Aguerd has attracted plenty of interest thanks to his impressive form at the heart of the Irons defence. The Moroccan arrived at the London Stadium last summer in a £30million transfer from Rennes.

He bounced back from an injury suffered at the beginning of last season, making his first appearance just before the World Cup. The left-footed centre-half went on to start 17 league games as the Hammers picked up form – and his performances have since continued to capture the attention of top Premier League clubs.

That includes Reds manager Jurgen Klopp, with the Anfield side’s recruitment chiefs keeping a close eye on the 27-year-old ahead of a potential deal next summer, according to The Sun.

Klopp is planning a defensive rebuild in order to address his side’s recent struggles at the back, in the same way that he overhauled his midfield this summer by adding four new players.

Long-time stalwart and captain Virgil van Dijk’s performances have deteriorated in recent seasons. Both he and Joel Matip are now 32-years-old, meaning it could be time for the Reds to add some fresh blood in central defence.

That is especially true given Joe Gomez’s lack of convincing performances when given the chance. Ibrahima Konate, meanwhile, clearly has potential but has repeatedly been hampered by injuries since signing from RB Leipzig in 2021.

Klopp could face competition from former Premier League rivals City if Liverpool ramp up their interest.

Pep Guardiola is understood to be an admirer of Aguerd, though the Spaniard already has a vast array of defensive options at his disposal.

Aguerd has made 33 appearances under David Moyes, scoring three goals in the process. He was sent off after scoring last month in a 3-1 win over Chelsea.
