Four left-field candidates to replace Erik ten Hag if Man Utd sack Dutchman

The pressure has eased on Erik ten Hag after Man Utd defeated Fulham

Erik ten Hag is facing an uncertain future at Manchester United. The Red Devils boss is under serious pressure after a dismal start to the 2023/2024 campaign. United are currently sitting in eighth place in the Premier League table with five losses heading into matchday 12.

Off the pitch, Ten Hag is also receiving resistance from his own dressing room over his treatment of certain players. According to the Daily Star, some cliques have developed in the wake of unwanted off-field situations involving Sancho, Antony and Mason Greenwood.

Some players reportedly want Sancho to be recalled to first-team training after his falling out with the Dutchman, while others would like to see Antony dropped from the squad. Meanwhile, The Daily Telegraph claim that Ten Hag’s treatment of former skipper Maguire has been met with discontent as well.

It is understood that no decision on Ten Hag’s future will be made until club executives vote on Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s proposal for 25 per cent of the club. While there are plenty of A-list managers being linked with his role. Here, Express Sport takes a look at four left-field candidates that could end up in the United dugout very soon.

Laurent Blanc

Laurent Blanc finished his playing career at Manchester United in 2003 but could make a surprise return as their new manager over 20 years later. Since a successful spell in the hot seat at PSG, Blanc moved to Qatar to manage Al-Rayyan before returning to France with Lyon. Blanc was sacked at the end of last season after failing to steer Les Gones back into Europe but could act as another Ole Gunnar Solksjaer-like figure if Ten Hag is axed.

Thomas Frank

Thomas Frank has completely transformed Brentford since taking the reins in 2018. Although not quite the Robert De Zerbi appointment that United fans are crying out for, Frank’s achievements cannot be understated. The Dane has guided his side to 13th and 9th-placed finishes during their first two Premier League campaigns after getting them promoted to England’s top-flight in 2021.

Marco Silva

Marco Silva is another Premier League hot property being touted to become Ten Hag’s successor. The Fulham boss turned down big money offers from Saudi Pro League clubs Al-Ahli and Al Hilal in the summer but would surely struggle to resist the pull of a move to England’s biggest club. Silva got Fulham promoted back to the Premier League in his first season in charge and has since established them as a solid mid-table side.

Ralph Hasenhuttl

Ralph Hasenhuttl is the only manager out of the four on this list who is currently without a job. The Austrian gaffer has been out of a job since being sacked by Southampton in 2022 and has previously held positions with Red Bull Leipzig and FC Ingolstadt 04. During his time with the Saints, he was linked with the United job before Ten Hag came in and has been mentioned in the same conversation once again now that the Dutchman is under pressure.
