Ex-Spurs star Andros Townsend on trial at Prem club and close to winning a deal

Former Tottenham and England star Andros Townsend is on trial at Luton and is close to winning a contract with the Premier League newcomers. The winger is playing for the Hatters’ development side against Leeds this evening after Rob Edwards confirmed he could be joining as a free agent.

Townsend has been without a club since leaving Everton at the end of his last season. His contract expired at Goodison Park and was not renewed after he missed the entire campaign due to injury.

The 32-year-old injured in ACL in March 2022 and hasn’t played a competitive match since. Townsend won the last of his 13 England caps in 2016 and knows his international career is behind him.

But he could be set for another crack in the English top flight. Townsend started for Luton’s under-21 team in the Premier League Cup match against Leeds on Friday evening.

Earlier in the day, Luton boss Edwards hinted a deal will be done if it suits both parties. He said: “There is room in the squad, we’ve only got 24, so there’s room for one more if we wanted to bring someone else in.

“Andros is available at the moment, he’s come in and been training with us for a week and he’s playing in a game tonight for the youngsters up at Leeds. We’ve been able to get a good look at him and also I’ve got to stress, for him, he needs to be able to have a look at us as well.

“He’s had a fantastic playing career, he’s still really, really keen, hungry to play, but it’s got to be right for him as well, for both parties. I’ve seen real signs of quality and what we’ve got to make sure is that if we’re going to add to the group, they can help us and make us better.”

Townsend recently revealed he was offered a contract with fellow promoted side Burnley in the summer. However, the Clarets withdrew the offer to leave him in tears.

He told BBC’s Monday Night Club: “It was probably one of the toughest conversations I’ve had in my career. To get offered a contract, to get to the day you’re signing the contract, and you’re just waiting for the paperwork to come through and then to be told that contract is being ripped away from you – honestly, I left that conversation in tears.

“I was literally in tears because I felt like my Premier League dream was over. And yeah, it was one of the toughest moments of my career.”
