Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag was loudly jeered by home supporters after replacing Rasmus Hojlund in Saturday’s Premier League clash against Brighton.

With United trailing by two goals, ten Hag made a double substitution just after the hour mark.

Casemiro was replaced by youngster Hannibal Mejbri with Anthony Martial brought on for the Denmark international.

The decision prompted boos from all around Old Trafford with United going onto lose 3-1 – their third loss in their opening five Premier League games.

Hojlund had been perhaps United’s best player during a frustrating afternoon at home, seeing his first goal for the club chalked off with Marcus Rashford’s cross judged to have gone out of play before finding the striker.

The £72million signing from Atalanta was starting his first game for the club having come off the bench for his debut against Arsenal prior to the international break.

Former United striker Danny Welbeck opened the scoring for Brighton after 20 minutes with Pascal Gross doubling their lead eight minutes into the second-half.

Following ten Hag’s double change, things went from bad to worse with Joao Pedro scoring a third.

Having come off the bench, Mejbri scored his first goal for the club to pull one back.

There was no further fightback however with Brighton controlling the remainder of the contest with Andre Onana denying Ansu Fati a fourth goal for the visitors.

Defeat leaves United in 12th place having taken just six points from five games.

Focus immediately shifts to their opening group game of the Champions League with a daunting trip to Bayern Munich looming next week.
