Chelsea axe Sarr from Premier League squad after leaving Pochettino embarrassed

Mauricio Pochettino was left a Chelsea gift by Thomas Tuchel and a £150m headache

Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino has left no room for defender Malang Sarr in his Premier League squad. The former OGC Nice centre-back, who pockets significant weekly wages at Stamford Bridge, has effectively been frozen out by the Blues boss, who suffered an embarrassing moment when asked about the player’s future in a recent press conference.

Sarr has not featured for Chelsea in a competitive match since Thomas Tuchel was in charge. The 24-year-old was snapped up on a free transfer back in 2020, but the fact he was in high demand reportedly saw him handed wages of ยฃ100,000 a week.

A grand total of eight Premier League appearances since hardly represents good value. And it is all but confirmed that there is no way back for Sarr in west London, as he has been left out of Pochettino’s 25-man Premier League squad.

Since he arrived from Ligue 1 three years ago, Chelsea’s squad has undergone a significant transformation through a raft of signings driven by co-owner Todd Boehly.

Summer recruits such as Djordje Petrovic, Nicolas Jackson and Axel Disasi have all been included, while the likes of Romeo Lavia and Lesley Ugochukwu did not need to be named as part of the 25-player list due to their under-21 status.

Sarr may have seen his omission coming when Pochettino seemed to have no idea who he was last month. When asked by reporters for an update on the defender’s situation, he responded: “Who? Oh my goodness.

“I don’t know what I can tell you. I don’t know because you surprised me! It’s like you punched me in the face and I am like this [startled], because we were talking about Luton!”

Sarr has embarked on two separate loan spells while on the books at Chelsea. However, stints at Porto and Monaco ultimately failed to bear fruit, and the Frenchman’s career remains in a state of disarray.

Formerly a France U21 international, Sarr must now head to a country where the transfer window is still open to stand any chance of a Chelsea exit. There is reportedly interest from Turkey, where the window closes on Friday, while the deadline in Qatar is not until September 18.

Pochettino is already spoilt for choice in central defence with Trevoh Chalobah, Benoit Badiashile, Thiago Silva, Levi Colwill, Wesley Fofana and Disasi among those fighting for minutes.
