Andros Townsend makes surprising admission about Man United

Andros Townsend makes surprising admission about Man United as he likens them to Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool… and Luton star picks out two of Erik ten Hag’s players for special praise

  • Manchester United ran out 1-0 winners when they hosted Luton Town recently
  • Andros Townsend, who played for Luton, likened Man United to Liverpool
  • It’s the world against Everton – it can galvanise the players to stay up – IAKO

Manchester United have drawn comparisons to Liverpool, with Luton Town midfielder Andros Townsend left impressed by Erik ten Hag’s ‘difficult’ side.

United ran out 1-0 winners against Luton before the international break, and former Tottenham, Newcastle and Everton ace Townsend drew comparisons to the Hatters’ 1-1 draw with Liverpool.

Ten Hag’s side have had their critics this season but Townsend is not one of them.

‘Extremely difficult. They are difficult,’ he told BBC Radio 5 Live when asked what it was like coming up against a United side that are the most in-form team in the league over the past five matches.

‘We were able to defend against them well but similar to Liverpool they just find a way.’

The was a degree of frustration from United’s supporters that they struggled to break Luton down, relying on a Victor Lindelof goal to secure the three points.

But from Townsend’s perspective United gave nothing up to Luton and it was a war of attrition for Rob Edwards’ side.

‘Honestly, it was an extremely tough game,’ he continued.

‘There was rotation all over the pitch. We were well-drilled and confident as we had just got a point against Liverpool the week before, we had a game plan to press high up the pitch and force turnovers, United didn’t really give us anything.’

Two players in Erik ten Hag’s squad were singled out for special praise from Townsend – Bruno Fernandes and Harry Maguire.

‘Bruno Fernandes drifts out to the outside left position, links up with [Sergio] Reguilon, they get a few crosses that way,’ he said. ‘[Diogo] Dalot comes to midfield creating an overload and we did limit them to very few chances and defended well.

‘Unfortunately, we switched off at one set piece and that was our whole game plan done.

‘At the top level you need to stay switched on for 95 to 96 minutes because these top teams can punish you.’

Townsend continued: ‘Maguire was good on the ball, we tried to press him but he was very good, Bruno Fernandes didn’t give us anything.

‘You look on the stats sheet and it might be like United didn’t do this or that but it was so difficult for us to be able to contain this United side. They posed so many problems, even if it doesn’t show up on a piece of paper.’

Plenty will be learned about United across the next few matches, with away games against Everton, who will be fired up following their 10-point deduction for breaking Premier League financial rules, at Galatasaray in a must-win Champions League match, and then a late kick-off at Newcastle.

United currently sit sixth in the league table, five points off Tottenham, who are fourth.
