England 71-0 Chile: Rugby World Cup Match Review

There was no shortage of drama on Sunday as Australia became one of the first major nations to exit from the Rugby World Cup, leaving Eddie Jones fighting to save his job. The Wallabies were humiliated by Wales in a record 40-6 defeat, leaving Jones on the brink of the sack just nine months after returning to his previous role with his home nation.

Scotland completed a clean sweep of victories for the home nations after they beat Tonga 45-17 on Sunday. But with South Africa and Ireland both ahead of them in the group stage, they must beat Romania on Friday to stand any chance of qualification.

On Saturday, England breezed past Chile 71-0 despite a scoreless first quarter as Steve Borthwick’s side racked up 11 tries on their way to their most convincing victory yet in France. Their next game against Samoa is not until October 7, giving them plenty of time to rest up before trying to maintain their 100 per cent in the tournament so far.

With no more action until Uruguay face Namibia on Wednesday, the teams will reflect and recover from this weekend’s results as the business end of the Rugby World Cup approaches.

Jones responds to calls to resign

Australia coach Eddie Jones has insisted he will not resign as he faces heavy pressure to keep his job following their Rugby World Cup humilation.

The Wallabies were dumped out of the tournament after a 40-6 defeat followed their loss against Fiji.

But Jones said he would not step down from his position as his job remains unfinished.

“I remain committed to the Australia project. I still believe I am the person to turn things around,” he told ITV.

“I was put in this job to turn Australia around and I don’t think I could have done it with the players we had. This is the most painful time but also the best time to learn for young players.”
