Australia head coach Eddie Jones has pinpointed the moment he decided to make an ‘abrupt change’ to his side’s World Cup preparations after taking charge of the team at the start of the year.

Jones replaced Dave Rennie in January after being sacked by England the previous month, and made significant alterations heading into the World Cup in France.

The changes did not pay off as the Wallabies lost to Fiji and Wales to fail to qualify for the knockout stages for the first time in their history. Jones has opened up on the adjustments he made to his team, and still believes it was the right call despite Australia’s disappointing campaign.

‘You inherit someone else’s team, you inherit a training programme, a schedule to follow. And then I decided two games into the Rugby Championship we had to make an abrupt change, that the status quo wasn’t going to be good enough for us,’ Jones said.

‘I look back and, obviously, think whether that was the right thing to do or not. But at the end of the day I think it was the right thing, and I think for Australian rugby going forward it was the right thing to do.’
