Concerns over Vilda\u2019s coaching methods and regime were reported to have been a key factor in 15 Spain players refusing to play for the national team last year.<\/p>\n
The federation, under Rubiales\u2019 leadership, refused to budge in response to the players\u2019 complaints, with a statement saying those involved would only be able to return to the national team \u201cif they accept their mistake and ask for forgiveness\u201d.<\/p>\n
The RFEF made no reference to any discontent among the players in announcing Vilda\u2019s exit, instead referring to his \u201cprofessionalism and dedication during all these years\u201d.<\/p>\n
In an interview with Spanish radio network Cadena SER following his dismissal, Vilda defended his record with the team.<\/p>\n
\nI have given 100 per cent and I don’t understand it – I didn’t see my dismissal as deserved<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
\u201cIn sporting terms, I am going to accept all the criticisms, but on a personal level I think it has been unfair,\u201d Vilda said.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt has been a special year. Nothing has ever been said directly, but indirectly things have been said that do not suit me. Things have been said that are not true.\u201d<\/p>\n
Vilda added: \u201cThe explanation is that there have been \u2018structural changes\u2019. After everything I have achieved, of working hard as just another worker, I have a clear conscience.<\/p>\n
\u201cI have given 100 per cent and I don\u2019t understand it \u2013 I didn\u2019t see my dismissal as deserved.\u201d<\/p>\n
Vilda also defended his reaction to Rubiales\u2019 defiant speech at the RFEF general assembly.<\/p>\n
\u201cI will never applaud anything sexist,\u201d he said. \u201cI didn\u2019t know very well why I was going to that assembly, I thought there was going to be a resignation.<\/p>\n
