Still a teenager at 19, Gauff seems now to be reaching the heights unfairly expected of her from day dot. After all, it was now four years ago she made her stunning run to the fourth round of Wimbledon at 15. She won impressively in Cincinnati last week \u2013 beating world No 1 and defending champion in New York Iga Swiatek en route \u2013 and is flying under the tutelage of Andy Murray\u2019s former coach Brad Gilbert, claiming two titles in the US hard court season and losing just once, to compatriot and third seed Jessica Pegula.<\/p>\n
However, Gauff is keeping her feet on the ground. \u201cI learned a lot over this last couple weeks \u2013 more so from my wins than I have in the past,\u201d she said in her pre-tournament press conference. \u201cThe most I\u2019ve learned over the course of this summer is that I don\u2019t have to play A-plus tennis to win.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen I wasn\u2019t playing my best tennis or wasn\u2019t playing great, I would kind of shut down a little bit mentally. Now I\u2019m just figuring it out as I go.\u201d<\/p>\n

The 38-year-old \u2013 famous for that marathon 11-hour match against Nicolas Mahut at Wimbledon in 2010 \u2013 will retire after this tournament. \u201cTime to lace \u2018em up one last time,\u201d he said in his retirement announcement, with the big-serving American looking to add to his record 14,411 aces in his final bow.<\/p>\n
The final Grand Slam of the year also sees a first: players and umpires will have access to \u2018VAR-esque\u2019 video reviews for contentious decisions such as double-bounces and net touches, with the use of various camera angles available on the five show courts. Its introduction will, if football\u2019s implementation is anything to go by, be a work in progress yet could well add a different slice of drama should it be needed frequently throughout the fortnight in the Big Apple. <\/p>\n
