Max Verstappen wins third consecutive Formula One world championship

Max Verstappen continued his rich vein of form to win his third successive Grand Prix over the weekend, cruising to victory at Circuit of the Americas. Lando Norris and Carlos Sainz both earned their teams valuable points by filling the podium spots, in what was a night to forget for Lewis Hamilton.

The Mercedes star was on the tail of Verstappen when they took the chequered flag on Sunday, but the skid on the bottom of his vehicle had worn away. Thus, it no longer complied with F1 regulations and the Brit was promptly disqualified.

Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc suffered the same fate following his P6 finish, in a disappointing post-race inspection for both drivers. However, the duo have the opportunity to make amends in the Mexico City Grand Prix this weekend.

Hamilton has fired a warning to his Mercedes engineering team ahead of the race in the hope of sparking improvement within the ranks over the coming weeks. Elsewhere, Verstappen’s racing etiquette has come under fire and prompted calls for him to be given at least a warning about his conduct.

Perez warned of sacking conditions

Sky F1’s Ted Kravitz has spoken out about a ‘rumour’ within the paddock that Sergio Perez may not see out his contract with Red Bull if he does not secure second spot in the Drivers’ Championship.

The Mexican finished P5 over the weekend, and he must improve over the coming weeks if he is to land the one-two for Red Bull.

Kravitz explained: “There is a rumour around the place that has it that, if Checo does not manage to seal out P2 in the Drivers’ Championship, which is something that Red Bull Racing have never done and something that Christian Horner and Helmut Marko value very highly this year, then they will have to have a serious think as to whether Checo indeed does stay within his contract for next year. Or, whether they have a proper conversation with Checo about whether he is actually going to be able to improve for next year.”
