Emma Raducanu first appearance in the country of her father’s birth will be played out in front of empty stands.
The Transylvanian Open announced that, due to a ‘last-minute’ Covid-related decision by the Romanian government, fans would not be admitted to next week’s tournament. Cases of the virus are at record levels in the country.
As well as the US Open champion, local fans will now be robbed of the chance to see Romanian superstar and 2019 Wimbledon champion Simona Halep.
