Emma Raducanu looks to continue her sensational US Open run as she faces world No 12 Belinda Bencic in the quarter-final on Wednesday (September 8). The 18-year-old has made it to the last-eight of a Major for the first time in her career, on just the second time of asking. She is the third women’s qualifier in history to make the quarter-final in Flushing Meadows, and is yet to drop a set across seven matches.

Raducanu has stormed through three qualifying matches and four main-draw matches, announcing herself to the world as tennis’ next big star.

The Brit played in her first-ever Grand Slam at Wimbledon, receiving a wildcard while ranked world No 338, and made it all the way to the round of 16 before retiring her match with breathing difficulties.

While her run at the All England Club cemented her as a new British star and put her on the radar of fellow tour players, the 18-year-old’s dominance at the US Open has taken her to new heights and earned her international recognition as one of the best young stars.

The Bromley teenager will be hoping to push on in Flushing Meadows and make the semi-finals when she takes on 11th seed Bencic on Wednesday, in what will be her biggest challenge yet.

Raducanu has completed a hat-trick of wins over top 50 players en route to the last-eight, first defeating lucky loser Stefanie Voegele 6-2 6-3 before overcoming world No 49 Zhang Shuai 6-2 6-4 in the second round after losing to the Chinese star in San Jose a month ago.

The 18-year-old then bulldozed past world No 41 Sara Sorribes Tormo with a comprehensive 6-0 6-1 victory to book her spot in the last 16, where she shook off her nerves and came back from 0-2 0-40 down to beat 43rd-ranked Shelby Rogers 6-2 6-1.

She now faces the toughest test of her young career as she takes on Bencic, a former world No 4 who recently picked up a gold medal in women’s singles and a silver in doubles at the Tokyo Olympics.
