We’re just eight days out from the 160th running of the Melbourne Cup but will your early fancy get a run in the race?
Twenty-four horses will face the starter next Tuesday and there’s realistically just two more chances to claim one of the places in the field.
On Wednesday the $400,000 Group 3 Bendigo Cup (2400m) will be run and six horses outside the top 24 in the order of entry are acceptances.
The Hawkes Racing Zebrowski (25th in the order of entry), Azuro (34th), Haky (37th), Joseph O’Brien’s import Pondus (39th), Lord Belvedere (42nd) and Saracen Knight (45th).
Victory in the Bendigo Cup opens the door to a weight penalty being imposed by Racing Victoria’s handicapping team.
A half-kilo penalty for Zebrowski if successful would ensure the gelding a start next Tuesday while the other potential Bendigo Cup winners would require 1.5kg or more to force their way into the top 24.

All six Bendigo Cup entries are also nominated for Saturday’s Group 3 Hotham Handicap (2500m) which carries the Melbourne Cup ballot exemption carrot.
Other horses outside the top 24 in the order of entry that are nominated for Saturday’s Flemington staying test are another nine horses.
Platinum Invador (28th), Ashrun (29th), Hush Writer (30th), Sound (33rd), Carif (36th), Schabau (40th), Attorney (41st), Admire Robson (43rd) and Future Score (44th).
The four horses placed 21st to 24th in the latest order of entry are respectively – The Chosen One, Steel Prince, King Of Leogrance and True Self.
