Trekking secures 11th-hour Everest spot as Godolphin overlook star colt

Veteran sprinter Trekking will run in The Everest for a third time after international breeding and racing giant Godolphin opted not to run crack colt Paulele in the $15 million sprint.

Godolphin announced on Monday the seven-year-old will represent their slot in the world’s richest turf race after a meeting between Australian boss Vin Cox and head trainer James Cummings.

Paulele surged into Everest contention after a slashing win in the Roman Consul Stakes at Royal Randwick last Saturday, but Godolphin maintained Trekking had long been their No.1 seed for the race.

Trekking finished third behind Yes Yes Yes in 2019 and fourth behind Classique Legend last year.

It leaves just one spot to be filled in The Everest. Slotholder James Kennedy is expected to make an announcement later on Monday, with Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott’s Embracer in pole position to secure his spot.
