Raceday focus: Best bets, analysis and latest odds for Saturday

TAB presenter Nicole Thomas previews the main races at Caulfield and Eagle Farm and gives her suggested bets.

BEST BET: FIFTH POSITION (Caulfield, R7 No.10)

VALUE BET: ZOUSHINE (Caulfield, R3 No.7)

LAY OF THE DAY: Incentivise (Eagle Farm, R6 No.4)

Caulfield R7, 3.30pm

Having only his third Australian start, Fifth Position ($6-$3.90) looks the one to beat after finishing 1½ lengths behind Lunar Flare in his second-up run. He meets her 3kg better this time after his run might have peaked at the furlong pole. There has been support for Mahamedeis ($11-$12 into $6) coming off a four-week let-up, following a run at Eagle Farm in the Premier’s Cup over 2400m. He’s a five-time winner at Caulfield and must be included for exotics. The favourite Bedford ($4.60-$3.80) also loves Caulfield and has met with plenty of early market support.

Caulfield, R8, 4.05pm

The favourite Corner Pocket ($2.70) has been going through the grades nicely. This would be his sixth straight win. Viral ($12) was the early favourite on race-day last start at Flemington but we could barely write a ticket for him all day. I’m expecting a better performance here. Forget Defiant Dancer ($12) went around on the heavy track last time out as the start prior was full of merit. Biometric was an impressive winner carrying plenty of weight last start but the wide barrier is a concern. Big watch on Jumbo Ozaki ($6.50) having his first run for a year, having yet to miss a placing from three first-up efforts.

Eagle Farm, R8, 3.22pm

TAB Stradbroke Handicap winner Tofane drifted out from $4.60 to $4.80 after drawing wide, but remains favourite for back-to-back Group 1 victories. The Michael Moroney-trained mare will take a power of beating on Saturday under the weight-for-age conditions. Subpoenaed ran on well for fifth in the Stradbroke despite a torrid run. After drawing favourably, she has shortened from $14 to $10. Mick Price mare Odeum is on the second line of betting at $7.50 and is a chance to get caught wide again here from barrier 15. Godolphin mare Savatiano ($8) also drew poorly and is the only other runner under double-figure odds.

THE TIP: TOFANE each-way

Eagle Farm, R6, 2.42pm

The bookies are not taking any chances with the short odds-on favourite Incentivise ($1.40) after the talented gelding cruised to a dominant 9½-length victory at Ipswich last start. This will be his eighth run since March and does have to make the big step-up in grade. The Maher and Eustace-trained Southern France ($6.00) is hoping to spoil the party and did contest the Group 3 Premier’s Cup last time out. Mirage Dancer ($8) is also prominent in the market despite struggling at her last few outings, however, they were much stronger affairs.
