Race day focus: Best bets, analysis for the Pakenham program

Herald Sun form analyst Brad Waters runs the rule over the eight-race card at Pakenham on Thursday.

MULETA (Race 5 No. 7 — $4)

Muleta has thrived since arriving at Brett Scott’s stable with a good first-up third and a win to his name in his two runs with the Mornington trainer. He hit the line hard to score at Cranbourne last time and has scope to improve further.

SUGARTOWN (Race 1 No. 10 — $3)

Showed ability at the jumpouts but the Danny O’Brien-trained Sugartown bumped into the smart Vowmaster on debut. Vowmaster showed the quality of that form when he trounced his rivals at The Valley. Sugartown will be hard to beat again.

SWAN CAP (Race 2, No. 10 — $4.20)

The well bred Swan Cap moved to the Peter Moody camp after his debut effort at Sale in June. The three-year-old showed he has come back well with a solid first-up second at Moe and can go one better with added fitness at Pakenham.

DESIGNER CHEF (Race 8 No. 1 — $7)

Designer Chef has just about raced himself out of Benchmark 70 class but he has one more crack at that level on Thursday. He fought on well to score over the Pakenham 1200m course last time out and will be hard to beat again despite the 62kg.

KIPTANUI (Race 6 No. 6 — $9)

Kiptanui was tried at 1400m for the first time and he wasn’t disgraced at Cranbourne last time out, making steady ground to finish just over two lengths from the winner. He’s a winner on the Pakenham track and is a good each-way bet this time.

Luke Nolen is usually among the winners at Pakenham evening meetings and Thursday’s meeting should be no exception with rides for the Hayes / Dabernig and Phillip Stokes stables among his bookings.

ENERGY WITHIN (Race 1 No. 5, $5), ROYAL GUN SALUTE (Race 2 No. 9, $3.90), ATYPICAL (Race 4 No. 1, $8), MELLORS (Race 5, No. 3 $5), FIELD OF ROSES (Race 7, No. 5 $3.40).
