New Zealand star Devon Conway has been ruled out of Sunday’s T20 World Cup final after suffering a broken hand by punching his bat during the semi-final win over England.
Conway has played a key role in New Zealand’s route to the final, having scored 130 runs in six innings, while also starring behind the stumps as the team’s wicket-keeper.
The 30-year-old scored a crucial 46 off 38 balls during the Black Cap’s impressive chase of 167 against England on Wednesday, before he was eventually stumped by Jose Buttler off the bowling of Liam Livingstone.
Despite his team making it to the final, New Zealand head coach Gary Stead has revealed that Conway will play no part in the match against Australia, nor will he be available for the upcoming Test series vs India.
‘Unfortunately Devon Conway broke his hand when he struck his bat after being dismissed in the semi-final vs England,’ Stead told reporters.
‘We’re gutted for Devon and he is obviously devastated by the news that he’s got a fracture in his hand.
‘He’s very much a team player for us, and so he’s feeling very sorry for himself, remorseful and I guess feel as though he’s let the team down.
‘We know we’ll miss him but it’s now a great opportunity for someone to come in and step up on the biggest stage and we certainly looking forward to that happening too.
‘Devon will also be out for the Test series vs India so it’s not just this game, he’s probably out for about five to six weeks, that’s the time frame we are looking at.’
