Mugatoo’s connections chasing votes to move one place into the top 10 in All-Star Mile voting

Mugatoo’s return to racing could be the final push the smart import needs to scrape into the top 10 contenders before All-Star Mile voting closes on Sunday.

Mugatoo sits 11th in the All-Star Mile public voting tally, needing to make up almost 600 votes on the Toorak Handicap winner Mr Quickie, who currently holds the final publicly voted position for the $5 million race.

Australian Bloodstock co-founder Luke Murrell said the camp had relied on social media for most of Mugatoo’s votes but said parties have been in contact to help attract votes for the six-year-old.

“He runs this Saturday and there has been a bit of contact from people wanting to do something to give him a push,” Murrell said.

The six-year-old hasn’t raced since his game fourth after racing wide in the Cox Plate, which followed his close second in the Group 1 Metropolitan Handicap (2400m) at Randwick.

The son of Henrythenavigator resumes in Saturday’s Group 2 Apollo Stakes at Randwick in which he is set to take on top-liners Verry Elleegant, Kolding, Colette and Fifty Stars.

Murrell said he hoped the Cox Plate effort and Mugatoo’s Apollo Stakes performance was enough to convince Racing Victoria to award him the winner of eight of 16 starts a wildcard into the All-Star Mile.

The All-Star Mile would be one of three autumn runs for Mugatoo if he made the field for the $5 million event at The Valley on March 13.

“He’s forward without being set for a first-up win and he’s only going to have a light autumn,” Murrell said.

“He’ll run Saturday, then hopefully run in the All-Star Mile and the Queen Elizabeth and that would probably do for the autumn.

“We’ll have another go at winning the Cox Plate in the spring.

“He’s got a very good record under 2000m and he has a good record fresh so we have planned the program around him and what he prefers and how he has done.”

Mugatoo is a $4.50 chance to win first-up in the Apollo Stakes while the gelding is a $15 chance in All-Star Mile betting.
