India slammed after New Zealand thrashing – ‘Time for serious introspection’

India began their T20 World Cup campaign as favourites, with Virat Kohli's side boasting one of the most impressive squads at the tournament.

However, things have not gone to plan so far for India, who have lost both of their Super 12 games in rather meagre fashion.

They were beaten by 10-wickets in their opening game against arch-rivals Pakistan, before suffering an eight-wicket defeat to New Zealand in their second.

As a result, India are in serious danger of failing to qualify from their group and several former stars have delivered some scathing assessments of the team's results.

Former India opener Virender Sehwag labelled the New Zealand loss "very disappointing" and he called for "serious introspection" ahead of their next game against Afghanistan.

He tweeted: "Very disappointing from India. NZ were amazing. India’s body language wasn’t great, poor shot selection & like few times in the past, New Zealand have virtually ensured we won’t make it to the next stage. This one will hurt India & time for some serious introspection #IndvsNZ"

VVS Laxman was also critical of India's batters and admitted that the idea of reaching the semi-finals is "a distant dream".

"This defeat should hurt Team India," Laxman tweeted. "Tentative with the bat, their shot selection was questionable.

"New Zealand bowled superbly, but India made their task easier. With their net run rate also taking a beating, a semifinal spot looks a distant dream #INDvNZ #T20WorldCup"

Ex-India batter Aakash Chopra described the team selection as "fundamentally wrong", with Ishan Kishan brought into the side to open the innings alongside KL Rahul, forcing regular opener Rohit Sharma to drop down to number three.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Chopra said: "You played Ishan Kishan because Suryakumar Yadav was not fit and made him open.

"In order to play the left-right combination, you made your biggest match-winner come down in the order.

"You changed your set batting order after just one loss and that is fundamentally wrong. I don’t think that can be justified."

Ex-England captain Michael Vaughan tweeted: "India could be on the way out of this #T20WorldCup.. the mindset & approach with all that talent so far has been so wrong #India"

Former Pakistan quick Shoaib Akhtar described India as "clueless and "completely lost", posting a video on Twitter with the caption: "The Indian team looked clueless tonight I really don’t know why.."

In the video, he said: "I just don't understand what game plan India were playing with. It was a completely lost squad. Everyone had pressed the panic button.

"Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma coming at different numbers, a new kid [Ishan Kishan] is batting at the top. They lost the toss and were just panicking."
