Grand National colours as fans look to cheer on their horse at Aintree

Frankie Dettori announces retirement as horse racing legend confirms farewell plans

With 40 horses taking to the field on Saturday for this year’s Grand National, it is certainly important to be able to distinguish which runner you have backed. Of course, the silks are the most differentiating factor, though the colour of each horse can be helpful to know.

Some annual punters traditionally back grey horses for the race – of which there are four this year – whereas others believe that a namesake is the best way to navigate their way through the field.

Bays and chestnuts are the most common horse colours, and the pair can easily be distinguished by the shade of their mane and tail. Both have a light, gingery brown coloured body, though a bay will have a black mane and tail, whereas a chestnut will be entirely brown.

There is a sprinkling of ‘brown’ coloured horses in the field too, which are the darker brown horses – though not dark enough to be registered as black. Express Sport takes you through the field and the colour of each runner…
