Frankie Dettori on day three Goodwood rides Sir Lucan and Empress Josephine

It’s been so nice to have crowds back this week, particularly at a big meeting like Goodwood. I thrive off the atmosphere and it really is a much better feeling when you ride a winner in front of a good few thousand people.

As for the ground, it’s pretty hard to know what we’re going to get as the forecast is so unsettled, but there’s a good breeze across the Downs and a bit of sunshine expected so I can’t see it being any worse than soft today.

I’m back with a couple of nice rides for Ballydoyle. It’s always good to pick up rides for Aidan [O’Brien] and it doesn’t matter if you’re on the second or third string as he has so much class in his yard that you’ll always be on something with a chance.

Sir Lucan in the 1m4f Gordon Stakes (3:00pm) is my first chance of the day.

He finished down the field in the Sandown Classic Trial earlier in the season, but we know how well that form has worked out with Lone Eagle, Adayar and Alenquer all coming out of that race.

Having won over 1m5f at Navan last time out on testing ground over a mile as a two-year-old, you’d be confident he has what it takes to run well in this sort of race.

He’s very well bred, has some good form in the book and comes from a top stable, so hopefully he can run a nice race.

My other ride is Empress Josephine in the feature, the 1m2f Nassau Stakes (3:35pm).

This looks a small but select field and obviously we are a little bit of an outsider, but you can’t write off a Guineas winner that’s for sure.

She’s got form on soft ground and has had only the five runs so hopefully still has a bit more to offer.

Fingers crossed she can run better than she did in the Coronation Stakes where she looked a bit keen in the early parts of the race.
