England head coach Chris Silverwood reveals reaction to India beating Australia

England head coach Chris Silverwood says India’s stunning Test series victory Down Under proves England can get the better of Australia and regain the Ashes later this year.

India were thumped in a one-sided series opener in Adelaide but bounced back to win Melbourne’s Boxing Day Test and drew in Sydney before triumphing on a pulsating final day at the Gabba to reclaim the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant starred with the bat to help the tourists reach their imposing target of 328 with three overs to spare in Brisbane and there have been calls for Tim Paine to step down as captain following the Baggy Greens’ defeat.

After watching India’s incredible performance from England’s bubble in Sri Lanka, Silverwood said: ‘I thought it was brilliant. It’s nothing to do with me, Tim Paine’s captaincy, but it’s always nice to see people in opposition teams under pressure.

‘It shows that, if you do the basics well and get stuck into them, we can beat them.

‘Our boys back in the hotel were taking an interest and I think most of them appeared for lunch after India had won.

‘So they were all staying and watching.’

England face the daunting prospect of nine straight Tests against India before heading to Australia and Silverwood insisted he was relishing the chance to take on the world’s best over the coming months.

‘What a fantastic way to prepare,’ he added.

‘All the guys here are excited to play in those series, just as we’re excited to play in this one.’

Joe Root’s first-innings double century helped inspire England to victory over Sri Lanka in the opening Test in Galle.

The second and final Test is due to begin on Friday at the same ground and the tourists will be looking for another strong performance before embarking on their tour of India.
