Victoria Derby favourite Young Werther is attempting to win the staying classic for three-year-olds at Flemington at only his third start.

The Danny O’Brien-trained colt opened at $3 after the barrier draw on Tuesday but has eased to $3.80 for the 2500m staying test.

Young Werther is yet to race beyond 1800m, having only won a 1500m maiden at Geelong before a luckless second in the Listed Super Impose Stakes (1800m) at Flemington last month.

He bypassed last week’s Vase at the Valley, which was won by Cherry Tortoni, who has been backed into a $4.40 second favourite.
