Clipperton breaks jaw but hopeful of riding in Golden Eagle

Jockey Sam Clipperton was having surgery on a fractured jaw on Tuesday morning after being kicked by a horse but is still confident of riding Maximal in Saturday’s Golden Eagle.

Clipperton was at his Hunter Valley farm feeding his stock when he was kicked and drove himself back to Sydney before being admitted to Prince of Wales Hospital on Monday.

“The fracture is low down in his jaw and he also chipped a wisdom tooth,” Clipperton’s manager Drew Smith told the Herald.

“He drove himself back for the Hunter and saw the surgeon on Monday night and was told he had to have surgery. He had to have surgery, but there is still a chance he will be able to ride on Saturday.

“He doesn’t want to miss the Golden Eagle and is hoping to get a doctor’s clearance to ride on Saturday. We will know [on Tuesday] afternoon.”

Clipperton has been in great form riding a winning double on Exoboom and Mazu at Randwick on Saturday.

John O’Shea has Alysha Collett on standby for Frankel’s three-quarter brother Maximal, who will be making his Australian debut on Saturday.

The import has been backed from $12 to $8 in the past 48 hours to be third favourite behind Toorak Handicap winner I’m Thunderstruck at $4.50 and Epsom winner Private Eye at $6.
