Robertson hits out at selectors for Head dropping

Former Test spinner Gavin Robertson has blasted Australia’s selectors for dropping Travis Head from the first Test against India, and questioned whether the coaching staff lacks subcontinent experience.

Robertson said the Australians “convinced ourselves” the pitch was going to be worse than it was, leading to poor decisions at the selection table.

Head hit 525 runs over the Australian summer, at an average of 87.5, but his record of 213 runs at 21.3 from seven Tests in the subcontinent was seemingly behind his omission.

Matthew Renshaw, batting at five, was dismissed for a golden duck on Thursday night, while Peter Handscomb at six made 31 before being trapped lbw trying to sweep Ravi Jadeja, who took five wickets.

“How in God’s name did we convince ourselves that Indian wickets were going to be so much more difficult, that we need to play Handscomb, that we need to play Renshaw, and Head’s no good at spin,” Robertson said.

“Let’s break up a top-six that over the last six to eight months has done incredibly well together.

“You can’t blame the pitch. The pitch was fine.

“It was absolutely normal for India. Have we seen 20 other wickets that are five-times worse than that? Yeah, we have.”

Where things stand as day two resumes

India will resume today at 1-77 with captain Rohit Sharma on 55 not out and nightwatchman Ravichandran Ashwin yet to score.

They are chasing Australia’s 177 all out and, unless wickets tumble, could build a formidable total and bat Australia out of this match going on their form yesterday.

Play is due to start at 3pm AEDT.
