Willian blasts Antonio Conte’s man-management skills at Chelsea

Arsenal winger Willian has opened up about his time working under Antonio Conte at Chelsea.

And he has lifted the lid about what went wrong for the Italian in his second season at Stamford Bridge, which ended in him getting the sack.

Conte was appointed as Blues boss in 2016, and won the Premier League in his first campaign.

Things did not go quite so well the following year, however, with Chelsea finishing fifth, although they did win the FA Cup in the same season.

After months of speculation Conte was fired in July 2018, with rumours circulating that he had fallen out with a number of players and with chairman Roman Abramovich.

And speaking in an interview with Brazilian outlet UOL, Willian admitted he and his teammates had their issues with Conte.

"Look, I think he’s a great coach," he said. "He works a lot tactically, on the defensive part as well. He’s a really hard-working guy.

"The problem he had was management, how to manage the group. That’s what he lacked, which is why he ended up having a lot of problems with several players, including me too.

"So that was really it. I think he was unable to manage and understand that there were many different players, from different countries, players considered stars. Important players for the club too. So I think he lacked that understanding."

Willian went on to add that Jose Mourinho was the most impressive manager he worked under, and praised the now-Tottenham boss for the impact he had on his game.

"I always say that the best coach I had was Mourinho," he continued.

"I think I learned a lot from him, he was a coach that gave me a lot of confidence when I was coming from Russia. Arriving at Chelsea with many players in my position, there were a lot of players in front of me and he ended up betting on me.

"And I learned a lot from him on a daily basis, the way he gives the meetings. The way he speaks. Even the way to encourage players too."

Willian has had a disappointing debut season at Arsenal so far, and it remains to be seen if he is involved in the side which takes on Leicester on Sunday.
