Manchester United have announced the return of Cristiano Ronaldo. And Lee Grant has revealed some players joked about taking down his mural when Manchester City transfer rumours were rife. The Portugal international has addressed his return to Old Trafford, paying tribute to Sir Alex Ferguson in the process.

After years of speculation, Ronaldo is back.

United have sensationally agreed to re-sign the forward from Juventus, paying around £19.5million in total for the transfer.

Before the announcement, however, it looked as though the 36-year-old could be on his way to Manchester City.

Jorge Mendes, the player’s agent, held talks with City about a move.

And goalkeeper Grant, speaking to talkSPORT, has now revealed players joked about taking down Ronaldo’s mural at a time where speculation was paramount.

“As usually with these things, the players are the last to know,” he said.

“We were aware there was something in the offing early in the morning and in the day, but of course these things are never straight forward.

“The news was strange as coming into the training ground, there was a lot of talk about the possibility of him heading to the other side of the city.

“We’ve got a huge picture of Cristiano in our gym and a few of the players were having a little bit of a laugh and joke about what might happen to that mural if he dared venture to the blue half of the city.

“That was an interesting conversation and then to see how quickly things moved during the day.

“It was incredible news.

“The excitement is palpable (in the dressing room) not just with the younger players. The thing that struck me and made me realise this is huge is actually the reaction of our more senior players.

“If Lee Grant is excited, who is one of our backup goalkeepers, and thinking the impact that is going to have on me and my training and the level I’ve got to bring, imagine what that is going to do for our more senior players.

“I was at the nursery picking up one of my children and one of the guys – one of our more senior players – and to see the look on his face and his excitement, bordering on giddiness at the fact we’ve been able to bring Cristiano in was a real eye opener for me.”

Grant also thinks United are onto a winner with Ronaldo’s return.

“It’s a really smart move from the football club and the manager,” he said.

“We’ve got a lot of really talented young players at this football club. We talk about the impact Edinson (Cavani) had when he came to the football club and the impact he’s having to this day.

“Ronaldo will bring that same level of professionalism and example that is vital for our young players, who are still making their way in the game.

“We’ve got young players, but they are top young players, so to learn from the pinnacle, the apex predator in Cristiano Ronaldo, there’s going to be none better.”

Ronaldo himself, meanwhile, has paid tribute to Ferguson after sealing his homecoming.

“I can’t even start to explain my feelings right now, as I see my return to Old Trafford announced worldwide,” he said.

“It’s like a dream come true, after all the times that I went back to play against Man. United, and even as an opponent, to have always felt such love and respect from the supporters in the stands.

“This is absolutely 100 per cent the stuff that dreams are made of!

“My first domestic League, my first Cup, my first call to the Portuguese National team, my first Champions League, my first Golden Boot and my first Ballon d’Or, they were all born from this special connection between me and the Red Devils.

“History has been written in the past and history will be written once again! You have my word!”

“I’m right here! I’m back where I belong! Let’s make it happen once again!

“PS – Sir Alex, this one is for you…”
