Victor Lindelof sends Liverpool title message to Man Utd squad after Red Devils’ Leeds win

Man Utd: Solskjaer assesses 6-2 Leeds win

Victor Lindelof has urged his Manchester United team-mates to block out all talk of a title challenge despite admitting confidence was growing within Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s squad. The emphatic 6-2 victory over Leeds on Sunday saw United close to within five points of Premier League leaders Liverpool with a game in hand and it also extended their unbeaten run to seven games.

But while the Sweden international conceded form and confidence is on the up, he maintained there was inherent danger in talk of a first title in eight years.

“The most important thing for us is that we’re focusing on one game at a time and that’s what we’ve been doing lately,” said Lindelof.

“I think we have been performing well and also we have got some good results.

“The main thing for us is just to keep working hard, keep focusing on the next game and that’s the thing.

“But obviously when you win games you gain more confidence and that’s what we’ve been doing lately.”

Victory at Old Trafford against Leeds will have given manager Solskjaer particular pleasure.

While they have an unblemished six from six record on the road their home form, dropping 13 points from a possible 21, has been shocking.

Lindelof said Sunday’s victory showcased a growing belief and self confidence and maintained that under Solskjaer they are developing a winning mentality.

“Especially in the second half against Leeds, we showed again the right mentality to keep on doing the things we know we can do,” he said.

“I am very pleased with the performance and the mentality as always was amazing today as well.”

United’s focus shifts from league when they tackle in-form Everton in the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup at Goodison Park tomorrow.

And after Solskjaer’s men fell short in three semi-finals last season – losing to Manchester City in this competiton, Chelsea in the FA Cup and Sevilla in the Europa League – Lindelof says they have a point to prove.

“At this club you always want to win stuff so it’s an important game coming up on Wednesday for us. Games come quick now so you just have to do the recovery right and be prepared for every game.

“But I think the depth we have in the squad is also very important for us going into this period of games.

“But, like I say, we want to win things, obviously, and every opportunity we get we want to win and to improve.

“We’re on a good run now, we’ve been performing well on the pitch, so hopefully we can just keep on going because we know, in this period, there’s a lot of games.”

Lindelof insists United’s squad is going to be tested fully over the course of four games in 10 days over the Christmas and New Year period.

And he urged those who have been on the sidelines to be ready to have an impact.

“Games are coming up quick and I don’t think every player is able to play every minute of every game.

“That is very important for us to have players who, if they didn’t play in one game, are ready for the next.”
