Romelu Lukaku is set to complete his £97.5m transfer from Inter Milan to Chelsea today. The 28-year-old Belgian international flew to London on Wednesday evening to complete the deal, which we see considerable firepower added to the squad of the reigning European champions.
Likewise Manchester United are set to announce the signing of Raphael Varane from Real Madrid today. The defender completed his medical on Wednesday and will add strength to United’s back-line in an expected partnership with captain Harry Maguire.
Elsewhere Chelsea are in talks with Roma over a bid to sign Tammy Abraham, whom Jose Mourinho is keen to bring to the Italian capital. Sevilla are willing to sell Jules Kounde to Chelsea, but the Blues are concerned about the £68m release clause putting them in breach of FFP. Tottenham are monitoring Fiorentina’s Dusan Vlahovic, the Serbian 21-year-old striker, in case Harry Kane departs, and are considering an offer for Southampton’s James Ward-Prowse.

Transfer news: Barca still owe Messi £33m

Transfer news: United rebuff Inter approach
Inter Milan were interested in signing Anthony Martial this summer, according to the Mail, but Manchester United rebuffed approaches for the 25-year-old. The club see the forwards as a key part of their plans, especially so this season given Marcus Rashford is out injured for several months recovering from shoulder surgery.
Here is our Senior Football Correspondent Melissa Reddy on how PSG wooed Messi:
As soon as that initial picture emerged of Lionel Messi waving to disbelieving masses from a balcony at Le Bourget airport, wearing a white Ici, C’est Paris T-shirt and a wide smile, the overflow of snide was served.
“Those tears disappeared quick.”
“Money dries eyes.”
“Just another snake who sold out.”
The greatest player of our generation – possibly the greatest ever – was forced out of the club he joined at 13, after breaking every record and the idea of what’s plausible on the pitch through 17 seasons in which he came to define Barcelona.
After everything he had given them, after everything he had given us, Messi was ridiculously expected to play for nothing “out of love” even though that would have made zero difference to the situation given the financial hole Barca have gradually dug themselves.
Lionel Messi at PSG epitomises football’s ills – but few can begrudge him
Becoming PSG’s latest frontman is not the romantic arc we wanted for the greatest player of this generation, but we can’t put the game’s ills at Messi’s mesmeric feet
