Tottenham could still sign Lautaro Martinez from Inter Milan this summer despite Romelu Lukaku’s impending move to Chelsea, according to reports. On Sunday The Times claimed Spurs had agreed a fee of £60million with Inter to sign Martinez. However, it has since been reported that agreement was reached before Chelsea had finalised a £97.5m fee for Lukaku.

Inter do not want to sell both players despite financial trouble at the Italian club.

The Athletic says Lukaku has been undergoing a medical on Monday ahead of his return to Chelsea.

The deal seems far down the line, with the Belgian expected to sign a five-year contract at Stamford Bridge.

Sky Sports reporter Kaveh Solhekol says the fan reaction at Inter would be strong if Martinez was allowed to leave as well.

However, Solhekol believes there is still a chance Spurs can sign the Argentina international.

He claims Martinez’s relatively low wages, as well as him entering the final two years of his contract, both play into Tottenham’s hands.

“I’m not sure if Inter would sell both Lukaku and Martinez,” Solhekol said on Sky Sports News.

“Yes they have financial problems, their fans are already up in arms about the fact that Lukaku is being sold. I’d dread to think what they’d do if Martinez was sold as well.

“Bare in mind Martinez only gets paid about £40,000 a week.

“Compared to other strikers of his quality, he’s not particularly well paid. And also he’s only got two years left on his contract.

“So I think if Spurs follow up that interest, if they keep knocking on the door of Inter and his agent, I still think there’s a chance that could be done.”

Martinez scored 17 goals in Serie A last season as Inter won the Scudetto for the first time in a decade.

His agent Alejandro Camano insists the player is happy at Inter for the time being.

Camano said: “Lautaro is happy at Inter and in Italy. His decision is to stay.

“He’s never going to have a fight with Inter to leave the club. Never. Lautaro’s an Inter player and he’s happy in Italy.”

Tottenham boss Nuno Espirito Santo was asked about interest in Martinez following Sunday’s 1-0 pre-season win over Arsenal.

But the Portuguese remained tight-lipped, saying: “I will not speak about any player.

“I will speak only about my Tottenham players – Spurs players, nothing else. Thank you.”
