Chelsea’s pursuit of Jules Kounde appears to have come to an end after Sevilla refused to lower the price-tag pinned to the talented defender. With less than 48 hours to play with until the window slams shut, transfer chief Marina Granovskaia must quickly consider alternatives if Thomas Tuchel is to get his wish of another centre-back.
After weeks of interest in Kounde, Sevilla have laid all their cards on the table with an extortionate valuation that Chelsea are not prepared to match.
It seems as though Chelsea picked the wrong fight, with the Spanish side similarly shunning Manchester City last summer when they made a respectable £50m bid.
Thomas Tuchel’s need for a new centre-back is not desperate, although Kurt Zouma’s departure to West Ham has made another defensive body preferable.
With little time to work with, Express Sport looks at three alternatives for Marina Granovskaia to consider before the end of the window:

The 24-year-old defender has been on the radar of many top clubs this summer, given that Villarreal cannot offer him any European football this season.
An approach from Tottenham was accepted by the Yellow Submarine, although the player turned his nose up at the prospect of moving to north London.
Chelsea, however, are the Champions League holders, so if they could match Spurs’ £43million bid then the deal could progress fairly quickly.
Standing at 6ft 4ins and having amassed 14 caps for the Spanish national team, the Blues would be getting their hands on a serious talent.

Bayern Munich’s beefed up 25-year-old has held his own at the top level since signing for the Bavarian giants in 2017.
Although it was widely reported that the German would put pen to paper on a new deal, that is yet to happen, meaning he still only has one year remaining on his current contract.
After the transfer deadline, Bayern would be taking a gamble on him signing a new deal before January, otherwise pre-contract negotiations could begin on a free transfer.
The Blues had supposedly been sniffing around Sule earlier this summer, and with Kounde’s deal dead in the water, now could be the right time to test Bayern’s resolve.
The young Tapsoba has caught the eye since moving to Bayer Leverkusen in 2020.
Linked with both Arsenal and Chelsea at various points this summer, Tapsoba dropped a hint on Instagram earlier this year that something may be in the works.
His short statement included: “With Chelsea FC, for the moment, there is nothing concrete, nothing official.”
With both clubs and indeed the transfer window many weeks further down the line, things may have changed, and the 22-year-old could be a viable alternative to Kounde.
