Thomas Tuchel reportedly convinced £98million signing Romelu Lukaku to join Chelsea by ‘sealing the deal’ through a private phone-call.

The striker’s club record-breaking move to Stamford Bridge was officially announced yesterday where he will receive €2million plus add-ons a year.

Lukaku had pledged his allegiance to Serie A winners Inter Milan but started to consider a return to Chelsea as manager Antonio Conte and Achraf Hakimi’s departures signalled a lack of intent by Inter Milan.

Now Goal reports Blues manager Thomas Tuchel’s phone-call with the all-time Belgium top-scorer convinced him to join, having stressed that Lukaku’s best years would be best spent with the Champions League winners rather than a struggling Inter.

Lukaku finished last season as Serie A’s second highest goal-scorer with 24 goals, five behind Cristiano Ronaldo.

He returns to Chelsea having joined ten years earlier for a fee of £10million, before leaving for Everton in search of first-team opportunities in 2014.

Lukaku told the club website: “I’m happy and blessed to be back at this wonderful club.

“It’s been a long journey for me: I came here as a kid who had a lot to learn, now I’m coming back with a lot of experience and more mature.

“The relationship I have with this clubs means so much to me, as you know.

“I have supported Chelsea as a kid and now to be back and try to help them win more titles is an amazing feeling.

“The way the club is going fits my ambitions perfectly and just coming off winning Serie A.”

Tuchel will hope Lukaku adds a clinical edge to his Chelsea side which struggled to finish chances last season.

Timo Werner especially is expected to benefit from Lukaku’s presence, with the German not being relied upon so heavily for goals, instead allowing him to contribute with his deadly pace and creativity.

Chelsea will be favourites to challenge Manchester City for the Premier League title alongside Manchester United, who have added Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane this summer.
